VANCOUVER — A young giraffe died at the Greater Vancouver Zoo Monday morning, despite efforts to save the animal.
Officials are trying to figure out what caused the death of Amryn, the youngest male giraffe at the Aldergrove facility.
Born Dec. 20, 2007, to mom Eleah and father Jan — who still live at the zoo — Amryn has undergone a full post-mortem, and zoo personnel promise to make those results public.
Amryn was found on the ground inside his barn and was treated aggressively, but died shortly afterward.

Giraffes, the tallest land mammal, are somewhat threatened due to habitat loss through agriculture and human settlements. They are also hunted for their fine fur on the tail, which is used for jewelry, and strong hide used for sandals.
